In true fashion, the sequel to Chuck Palahniuk’s groundbreaking novel appears in a format nobody could have predicted.
The cult classic that spawned the David Fincher movie, starring Brad Pitt and Ed Norton, finally gets the second chapter that so many of its fans craved.
Nobody could have predicted this and it’s no surprise then that nobody could have predicted how the tale would continue.
We are introduced to Sebastian, a beleagured man in his mid 30s living with a wife who doesn’t appreciate him and working a job that just about pays the bills but fails to challenge him on any significant level.
We realise early on that this man is none other than Tyler Durden, or at least the non-descript protagonist of the original Fight Club whose subconscious gave birth to the legend that was Tyler Durden.
Marla is now his wife and they are living the dream. Or at least what society dubs the dream and it isn’t long before we realise that Marla longs for the man she fell in love with, not the pill popping sedated everyday joe that her husband has become.
Needless to say, Sebastian is finding it hard to suppress his urges and it isn’t long before we get a glimpse of the real Tyler Durden who, despite the medication, is chomping at the bit to get released.
Fight Club 2 contains all of the subversive humour that Palahniuk fans have grown to love. While it isn’t immediately clear where Palahniuk is going with this, it’s clear that we’re going to have a blast along the way.
If you’re a fan of Palahniuk’s writing, or even someone stuck in a dead end job wondering how his life reached this point, you’ll find something to love here.
Of course, to tell you more would be to break the first rule of Fight Club.
