Aquaman has undergone a marvelous transformation since Geoff Johns took over writing his stories. He went from being the butt of all the jokes in the superhero world to a bonafide badass. With Johns leaving the title, I’m sure a lot of people are abandoning ship. As for me, I saw it as a great opportunity to start reading Aquaman’s solo series for the very first time!
As the King of Atlantis, Arthur has many bureaucratic responsibilities. He has to attend council meetings, dress the part of a king, and do what’s best for his people. There’s a problem though; sometimes the council and the king don’t see eye to eye on what’s really best for the people of Atlantis and there are those out there that will stop at nothing to disprove Arthur’s right to the throne.
Jeff Parker is coming in to this series with huge expectations since Geoff Johns resurrected Aquaman’s reputation. I’m happy to say it looks like he’s going to deliver! This issue is filled with action, political deception, and lots of Atlantian mythos. I’m not at all familiar with Aquaman, but for the most part I didn’t feel lost as to what was going on in the story. I’m very intrigued about what’s going on; I’ve been getting a very Game of Thrones-ian vibe from the Council of Atlantis and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with it!
This book is absolutely beautiful! I’m not 100% how the art duties were split up in this book (there were two people on inks, on colors, and on pencils) but the team did a fantastic job from start to finish. Without divulging too much, I couldn’t help but stop and admire the epic battle sequence at the end of the issue. It’s not often panels hold my attention like that with just the art alone, but this book is worth admiring.
I’ve been so excited to read Aquaman for the first time. I’ve loved Parker’s work on Batman 66 and I proudly admit that I loved this book. Everything about it is fantastic, but until I read the trades I’m not sure how it stacks up against Johns’ run on the character. (Maybe one of you could let me know in the comments or on twitter!) Parker and his team have planted the seeds to continue Aquaman’s epic run and I can’t wait to see how this thing is going to play out!
