Robin returns to this book’s title as the Robin Rises story ramps up.
Tomasi has said before that this is going to be a big story, and he sure wasn’t lying. This issue picks up right where the Robin Rises one-shot left off, with Bruce challenging the Justice League. I appreciated the League’s stance that they sympathize with Bruce’s loss, but are trying to keep their heads on straight and be objective. I also really liked how quickly and easily Bruce could counter each of their points against him.
And while the things with the Justice League was great, what really made this issue shine was when Bruce returned to the manor. The recreation of the firefly scene from Batman & Robin #4 was absolutely magical, only made better by Superman showing up to lend a listening ear. I adored the highly of their super-bromance, and no one could do it better than Tomasi.
Gleason continues to own this book. I loved the individual looks he gave each of the League, and the mastery in which he recreated the fireflies. If you looked between the scene in #4, and the scene in this one, you’d have think they were made at the same time. The only misstep I think there might have been was the double spread at the end of the Bat-family. While I like the idea of it, I think anatomy between the characters might be a bit off.
This story is only just beginning, but already it’s turning into a ride for the ages. Waiting a month for the next installment might be close to torture!
