COMIC REVIEW: FTN reviews Daredevil: Dark Nights #4

One day at my LCS, I randomly came across the first issue of Daredevil: Dark Nights. The art on the cover had a really old-school feel to it, and even though I’ve never really been into Daredevil, I picked it up, and am I ever glad I did! What David Lapham has built with this series are great, human stories mixed with old-school heroics, it’s a very nice, extremely refreshing change of pace!

Issue #4 is the start of a new arc called A Man Named Buggit. We start with Mr. Murdock providing legal council for a two-bit criminal, Michael Rochelle. I love the fact that Lapham makes a point to show the duality between DD and Matt Murdock. We all read these stories to see heroics, but it’s nice to get that reminder that our heroes are people too and this book does a terrific job of that. It doesn’t take long before our hero is donning the red suit and horns while performing acrobatic heroics all over the city. If the first four issues of this series are any indication of how great this creative team, then as long as they stay on, so will I!

It’s rare for a writer on a major publication to also be the artist, but that’s what we have on this DD series. Not only is Lapham a fantastic writer, he’s a great classic-style artist as well. While the colors in this book don’t jump right off the page, the clean, old school art more than makes up for it. Every single issue in this series has told a great, human story and the art does its fair share to convey that as well. It’s really important to me for the art to be able to tell a story without words, and it’s executed perfectly here!

I’m so glad I made the decision to start this series. It’s the perfect blend of raw human emotion and classic heroics. I really wish it was getting more attention, but even if it never does, I’ll be following this creative team wherever they go!
