I’ve really enjoyed this series so far. The stories and art have been pretty good so far. Unfortunately, issue #3 takes a bit of a dive. This issue introduces us to the Green Lantern of Earth 2 and gives us his origin. I was really excited for this since I am A huge GL fan, but this story just fell short for me. Picking up at the train wreck where we last saw Alan Scoot in issue #2, he somehow finds himself in the presence of a glowing green entity claiming to be the spirit of the Earth. Warning Scott of a huge upcoming conflict, the glowing green glob bestows upon him the powers of the Earth channeled through a ring Scott had.
Now while I expected this origin to differ from the original Alan Scott, I didn’t expect his powers to be bestowed to him though a glowing green entity which recalled to mind the story of Moses and the Burning Bush. Most of the Earth entity’s dialogue is over the top and corny. While his costume is really cool, most of these scenes read rather boring to me. The entity’s unwillingness to answer any of Scott’s questions and concerns was also kind of silly to me and created a false sense of aloofness. Talking in riddles and not answering questions does not make you mysterious, it makes you a douche. There was a fun side story involving the Flash meeting Hawkgirl and getting his butt handed to him in a test battle.
The art here was good and the colors were nice and vibrant, but I really hope the next issue picks up the pace a little bit more.
