IDW announced that they had the rights to the Crow last year, but announced yesterday at WonderCon 2012 some details around the creative team involved in the launch … and the news has this unabashed Crow fan all a quiver!
First of all the series is going to be set in Japan, and will be taking a different direction on the premise, though at the same time remaining really dark and reminiscent of what the original Crow creator, James O’Barr, did without being derivative of it. As it has his involvement and blessing I can only see great things coming!
The first miniseries will be by writer John Shirley, who may be best known for his horror novels – or possibly for the fact that he wrote most of the lyrics for Blue Öyster Cult albums Heaven Forbid and Curse of the Hidden Mirror – but a little known fact about him is that he also wrote the first draft for the original Crow movie (as an aside here, I live in a miror universe where the only Crow work available to the public is the first movie, the TV series and anything that James O’Barr actually created … there are no movie sequels and anyone that tries to convince me otherwise may have to be silenced, with prejudice! ~Jay). Eisner award nominee, Kevin Colden, is lined up as the artist with covers to be supplied by Ashley Wood, Kyle Hotz and *DRUM ROLL PLEASE* original creator James O’Barr himself!
IDW say that this is scheduled for July 2012.
If that isn’t enough James O’Barr is also working on a separate Crow series, using ideas that he had been waiting on for decades, which will come out later in the next year or so which – to paraphrase Eric Draven himself – means that 2012 Guess is not going to be a good year to be a bad guy.
