As you probably know already one of the biggest questions in table top gaming at the moment is quite possibly, “what codex will GW release prior to the rumoured release of their 6th edition rule set in July?” but should we really be listening to rumours or trying to predict GW’s next move?
Lets take a look back at 2010, there was three codices released that year.
- Tyranids in January
- Blood Angels in April
- And November Dark Eldar swooped in on spiky evil sand barges.
Moving on to 2011 there was no January codex but April we saw the release of Grey Knights and then November we got the awesome Necrons. We assumed we would see a similar release schedule for 2012 and we got lots of rumours stating what was going to be released and when, such as Tau seemed all but guaranteed for a January 2012 release but alas January came and went without any new codices and now April has all but past and still no sign, that’s 5-6 months without a codex Now I’m not saying the next codex will be November because as we have already seen we can’t use a previous years schedule as a prediction tool.
Take a look at 2008 for example. GW released codex Orks in January of 2008 (one of the armies to feature in they’re upcoming 5th edition starter box) and the all new Daemons codex in May with 5th edition hard back rule book being released in July of the same year. Then September of 2008 Assault on Black Reach 40k’s starter box with rules, miniatures and lots more was released featuring both Orks and Space Marines. October saw the Space Marines get a new codex to complete they’re part in the 5th edition release. Moving forward to this year and so far we have seen a clean up of some long awaited lines like nids and space wolfs and a few bits and bobs like decals and shoulder pads but no new codex.
GW are playing they’re cards closer to they’re chest than usual (this is apparently due to the a claus in Warner Brother’s contract with GW for the rights to produce Hobbit and LotR’s games) and the 40k rumours are coming thick and fast, with a picture of a Dark Angel unfolding on the spines of White Dwarf each month
and Chaos Space Marines at the top of the rumour list of factions to be included in 6th edition’s version of Assault on Black Reach it’s all very confusing here’s some of the latests Chaos/6th edition rumours as an example.
First up is a post from BoK’s
Troops choices will be Chaos Space Marines and Cultists
All Cult Marines are Elites
No new Special Characters
Special Characters will unlock Cult Marines as troops (Kharn for Berserkers and so on)
Typhus makes Cultists into Zombies
Chaos Dreadnaught is removed and replaced with a new unit (like how pariahs were replaced with Lychguard)
CSM now get a Flyer a Mechanical Chaos Dragon (model is done will be part of initial release)
Lesser and Greater Demons are gone
Spawn replaced by “Fell Beast”
I feel like I am missing something…
Rules for Traitor Guard are in!
Latest from BoLS
-The “flying dragon thingy” is coming. It is a flyer and one of two entirely new units added to the codex.
-The second new unit is said to be a Chaos answer to the Grey Knight Dreadknight.
-The Chaos Dreadnought is indeed still there (take a breath people), but gets a new name, and a rules overhaul.
-Hardcover book (just like Fantasy army books)
-Many of the general concepts from magic from Warhammer Fantasy are coming to Warhammer 40,000.
-There will be “lore equivalents”
-Psychic powers will be generated randomly by psykers (like fantasy)
-Entirely new rules for constructing army lists (~Look at Fantasy for hints)
-The FOC may be history
~Enjoy my pretties… More as it comes in.
This is all very interesting but predictions and rumours hold very little weight,as 2012 has proved but maybe we should thank GW for keeping so many secrets and when GW give us something official we can go back to the days before the rumour mongers and internet spoilers and actually get excited about White Dwarf and its contents, you know those days when we were actually surprised by something when it was released.
