Alien invasion expected in Northern Ireland

September 26th, 2012 by bash No Comments

Ladies and Gentlemen, ISLAND Arts Centre has interrupted its regular advance preview to bring you this special news bulletin. Wireless Mystery Theatre presents War of the Worlds, a tale of aliens and mass hysteria as they bring to life the infamous 1938 radio broadcast that had Americans believing Martians had arrived on Planet Earth to destroy mankind!

In an entertaining hybrid of old-time radio and live theatre, War of the Worlds plays at ISLAND Arts Centre, Lisburn, Northern Ireland on Saturday 29 September at 8pm.

Through a combination of live music, sound effects, and period commercials Wireless Mystery Theatre will transport theISLAND audience into an old-time radio studio where they recreate the controversial 1938 Orson Welles “Panic Broadcast” based on H. G. Wells’s fantasy, The War of the Worlds.

The fateful Halloween transmission on Sunday, October 30, 1938, was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins. These suggested to 6 million listeners that an interplanetary conflict had started with invading Martians spreading wide death and destruction in New Jersey and New York. A wave of mass hysteria seized thousands.

This heart-stopping recreation of that fateful broadcast is certain to have Lisburn theatre-goers scanning the skies for extraterrestrial life and heat rays.

Tickets are priced £10 and are available by logging onto islandartscentre.com. Alternatively please contact ISLAND Arts Centre box office on 028 9250 9254.

Hi all. I'm Bash, I'm 33, and I became a nerd when I first saw Star Wars as a child. Although I've watched hundreds of movies, read dozens of books and played numerous computer games since, nothing has come close to seeing George Lucas' epic for the very first time. At Following the Nerd, I'm Marc's right hand man and can be heard every Thursday trying to be funny on our radio show. I hope you all like the site and come back often.
