Can’t get enough of teens hunting each other down for entertainment? Then this one is for you. CW is planning on developing a show based on the Japanese cult classic Battle Royale, according to Deadline.
For those not familiar with the movie, it’s about teens placed on an island and forced to kill each other until only one remains. Though it does sound like the Hunger Games, Battle Royale was actually released in 2000. Though it was hard to find here in the U.S., my cousin who was managing a video store at the time, was able to find a copy on videoCD. Battle Royale was a much darker take on the premise than Hunger Games and is now enjoying some time in the sun with a proper Blu-Ray release.
When CW president Mark Pedowitz was asked if this was a good time for such a violent release involving kids, especially in today’s current environment, he stated: ” We’re not planning anything that we cannot get on air; we won’t go in that direction.”
On a side note, when Pedowitz was asked about upcoming DC property Arrow he said,” Even if Arrow does not work- and I hope it does work for a lot of reasons- we plan to continue developing comic characters.”
Great news for us nerds wouldn’t you say?
