Branagh to direct Jack Ryan

March 27th, 2012 by bash 1 Comment

Variety are reporting that Kenneth Branagh (above) will direct the still-untitled Jack Ryan movie.

Chris Pine will play the Tom Clancy character, previously portrayed on-screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, in The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears respectively.

Last week saw the departure of director Jack Bender from the project.

Northern Ireland-born Branagh most recently directed Thor.

Hi all. I'm Bash, I'm 33, and I became a nerd when I first saw Star Wars as a child. Although I've watched hundreds of movies, read dozens of books and played numerous computer games since, nothing has come close to seeing George Lucas' epic for the very first time. At Following the Nerd, I'm Marc's right hand man and can be heard every Thursday trying to be funny on our radio show. I hope you all like the site and come back often.

I’ve no doubt that Chris Pine will make an adequate jack Ryan having already established himself as an action film actor. However I think the continuous reboot of the Ryan books is now becoming as stale as Bond did after the first five-or-so movies.
Harrison Ford made the perfect Jack Ryan and had, in my opinion, the best adaptations into movies. Albeit, Red October will always probably be considered the best as it was the first.
Unless they can carry on from where it was getting interesting at the end of “A Clear and Present Danger” with the Whitehouse machinations being exposed, then I think they should leave it as the next book followed on and should, therefore, have an established and credible (Age and status) Jack Ryan.
