Crazy post of the week: Is Big Brother REALLY watching?

February 27th, 2012 by Marc Comments

I love a good conspiracy theory. Always have, be it aliens on the moon or 9/11. Now, not to say I believe it all, I don’t, but I often enjoy even the craziest ones that allow the imagination to run riot… I never tire of reading about the illuminati, project blue beam, aliens building the pyramids. I love it all… but every now and then something rings true for me.
Several years ago I read an article, the author is long lost in the abyss of useless information, but the idea behind it has stayed with me.
The author – and this was long before iPhones, Blackberries etc – suggested that at some point in the near future our identity, bank accounts, personal info, pictures, everything, would be stored in one handheld device. Now, this may sound like a good idea and I guess in some ways it is, however the article then implied that there is something more sinister at work here.
Imagine a government wanted to get rid of you… imagine all they had to do was log into one piece of hardware and essentially delete you, your history, money, everything. Scary, right?
Well, tie this into things like Facebook and Twitter and the new facial recognition software they are employing and how every camera leaves a digital stamp on pictures now.
What does this all mean? Well, imagine a world of the future where supercomputers can instantly identify every person in every picture taken and then they can also work out who took the picture. From this and with the handheld device that everyone carries that has all your information on it, these same computers will at all times know where you are, what you’re doing and who you’re with.
Now, read this article about how Target was able to tell a girl she was pregnant before her parents even knew, and how our buying habits are stored by our store cards and this information is corellated, logged, broken down and from it the store can generate vouchers to match your personal profile. But once again, what else could this be used for?
Now, let’s get back to the handheld device that stores your whole life (iPhone users like myself will already identify with this). A friend sent me this article recently and suddenly the prophesy of the unknown author started to ring very, very true.
Are we now just collections of information to be watched, monitored, controlled and… predicted?
Maybe. Anyone who has ever read George Orwell’s 1984 will know just how close we are getting. Maybe we need to stop and look around, at just what we are becoming.
Or maybe it’s all nonsense… either way, I hope it’s got you thinking. And not just that I’m a raving paranoid lol 🙂

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
