In what must be the wtf news of the week, it seems that Tom Cruise is set to star in a new take on the Van Helsing story.
Anyone unlucky enough to have seem the 2004 movie starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale will, like us, be wondering ‘why?’!
However, there is some hope in this. Universal have put out word that Cruise will produce what is hoped to be the beginning of a new franchise which will be written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the writers of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, the first two Transformers movies, Mission: Impossible III and FTN favourite Fringe.
They all also plan on bringing back The Mummy (see our original story on this here) Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman, Donna Langley said: “Alex and Roberto are extraordinarily talented writers and producers who know the value of a great story in building successful tentpole films. They have been a major part of some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and television shows in recent history, and we’re eager to have them build on that success at Universal.”
We believe there is good movies to be made in these universes and make no secret of being fans of Cruise, Orci and Kurtzman, so we are hopeful – but, as always, sceptical…
