Having already dipped his toe into televisual waters with the excellent ‘House of Cards’ director David Fincher is set to take the plunge by directing a full season of upcoming HBO series Utopia. The ‘Fight Club’ director will be joined by ‘Gone Girl’ author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn with the duo developing the remake of the UK series together.
The original UK series “follows a small group of people who find themselves in possession of the manuscript sequel of a cult graphic novel called The Utopia Experiments which is rumoured to have predicted the worst disasters of the last century. This leads them to be targeted by an organisation known as The Network, which they must avoid to survive. Using the manuscript, they must uncover the meaning hidden in its pages before the disasters depicted become reality.”
In an interview with The Guardian Fincher said;
“I like the world of it. I like the characters – I love Dennis’ [Kelly, creator of the UK show] honesty and affinity for the nerds. I mean, I’ve always been a bit of a junior conspiracy theorist cos I don’t have time to connect them all! But it’s nice to see that somebody has.”
With Steven Soderbergh also venturing into TV with his series ‘The Knick’ it appears more and more directors are being drawn to the small screen in order to better develop their characters and stories. Game of Thrones creator recently remarked that “people are now looking to television for story and the cinema for spectacle” with more big names like Fincher making the move he seems to be right.
