The rumour mill is going into overdrive reporting that Christian Bale is keen for another Batman movie… but that’s not exactly what he said.
The Dark Knight was a phenomenon and some may argue it was mostly because of Heath Ledger’s death. While we do obviously agree this helped the movie’s success (I felt very cold writing that), there is no getting around the fact that The Dark Knight is not just a great superhero/comic book movie, it’s a great movie.
Now there’s a lot expected of The Dark Knight Rises, released next month. And there is a lot of stiff competition this summer with The Avengers and Spider-man, however, we reckon it’s safe to say that director Christopher Nolan’s final batman movie will still be a big success.
Now rumours are being circulated by gossip sites like OMG that Christian Bale has said he wants to do another movie. This is not exactly what he has said and it’s really just an attempt to get the headlines.
What Bale actually said was: “If Chris (Nolan) came to me with a script and said: ‘You know what? There is another story, then I would love the challenge of making a fourth one work.”
So what he’s saying is that he wants to work with Nolan again if he comes back for another, not that he’s keen to just jump into another movie. Nolan and Bale have a history working together and it seems that, understandably, Bale wants to continue this.
However, Nolan has – so far – made it quite clear that he has no desire to make a fourth installment. He said from the beginning that he saw the Batman story as a trilogy and that’s as far as he wants to go with this take on the character.
However, one thing we can gleam – SPOILER ALERT – is that perhaps the outcome isn’t as bleak as some think. If Bale wants to come back, then Batman must arise triumphant. Or maybe not.
All will be revealed next month.
We’ll leave the final words with Bale: “My understanding is that this is the last one. I think it’s appropriate, I think it’s correct. I think it’s going out at the right time. But, look, Chris always plays his cards very close to his chest.”
