The battle between aliens and humans in the alien invasion TV thriller Falling Skies has found a new battleground, Twitter. As part of an interactive social TV campaign for Sunday’s season 3 premiere, TNT is asking fans to pledge their allegiance, by using hashtags, to either the Earth invaders (#aliens) or the human army (#resistance).
Participants will immediately be “drawn into the action” in graph novel-style artwork.
Lincoln Lopez, TNT’s vice president of social media strategy and innovation says:
“This is either an illustrated portrait that features them in the world of the show, based on their Twitter profile image or an image they send, or an illustration that features their name on a character standing ready to fight with their chosen side.”
The Falling Skies season 3 premiere episode airs Sunday June 9th at 9 p.m. ET. When the campaign ends at 11 p.m. ET, the side with the most tweets will visually take over the @FallingSkiesTNT Twitter account as the profile’s skin changes to represent the winning team. The most-engaged participants also will be featured in a live-generated video showcasing those fans taking control of Earth.
TNT will promote the #alien and #resistance hashtags on-air during the premiere.
“For fans of any show, and especially sci-fi, immersing yourself in the story and investing yourself in the characters is what makes it worth watching,” Lopez said.
Lopez explained further:
“By creating an interactive, competitive game on Twitter, we were able to recognize and reward passionate fans by letting them become a part of the story and through the game, naturally create buzz around the show. This is social TV.”
