Greetings fellow Nerds and Nerdettes; well I’m off to Collectormania 19 for a weekend of guests, photos, memorabilia and all round nerdiness!
Collectormania 19 is taking place at The Dons Stadium, Milton Keynes and the line-up for this event is amazing. Film and television guests include Jenna-Louise Coleman, Billie Piper, Gillian Anderson, Charles Dance, Kenny Baker, Christopher Judge and even the original “Incredible Hulk” Lou Ferrigno!
With over 50 guests from such movies as Star Wars, Star Trek, Lethal Weapon, Harry Potter and television series such as Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and Red Dwarf, there really is something for everyone.
Oh, and just in case you are fan of sport, there are also a number of sporting legends including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Frank Bruno, Peter Shilton, Sterling Moss and Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards.
With photo opportunities including The Game of Thrones “Iron Throne” and “Gollum”, guest signings, cosplay and the usual plethora of stalls featuring every kind of collector merchandise in the galaxy, this is an event that really is out of this world!
Entry to Collectormania is free with doors opening each day at 9am (but best you get there early) and there is also a free shuttle bus from Milton Keynes to the venue. For travel information, full guest list and event timetable, please visit: http://collectormania.com/miltonkeynes/
But don’t worry if you can’t make it, as I’ll be there in all of my Nerd glory, with reports, interviews and highlights from each day.
Ps I’ve been told by Marc to leave my lightsabre at home, not fair! (I was wondering why Phil was so giddy to go to this until i put together the photo montage below – Marc)
Day one report: Saturday, May 25th
Collectormania this year is different from some conventions in that there are no talks or demonstrations, but to be perfectly honest, there simply isn’t the time for it. The day started off (very early!) with queuing outside the Dons Stadium from 7:30am, great to know that I was not the only enthusiast to be up at the time queuing.
The doors opened at 9am and the crowds filed in from multiple entry points; remember that Collectormania 19 is Free Entry, so no delays in paying entry fees. Though I am glad I got there early as I had multiple photo opportunity tickets that I wanted to purchase.
This was my first time attending a Collectormania event as I was pleasantly surprised. The entire convention is held in the area above the stadium, and unlike most conventions, the area is in a circle shape, which once you get used to it, is actually quite easy to navigate round.
There were guests aplenty, ranging from Charles Dance, Dave Legano, Elle Kendrick andJenna-Louise Coleman to the awesome Gillian Anderson. For those of you who have never attended a convention like this, there are opportunities to purchase autographs and photographs from all of the guests but it is best to plan your day early as some guests will be busier than others.
Suffice to say that I was busier than a probe droid looking for those guests that were here for today only. Then again, being the Nerd that I am, I could never just stroll past any vendor who is selling collector film and tv merchandise. Flittering from one location to another and meeting a great number of guests is a brilliant way to spend the day.
Sadly though, the day simply vanished, though I was able to grab a very quick interview with Elle Kendrick and also Glynn Baker from Return of the Jedi/The Wild Geese fame, both of which will be exclusively on Following The Nerd after the weekend!
Well that’s me for today, back to the hotel for some much needed downtime and then off to do it all again tomorrow. The Collectormania 19 event is on Sunday and Monday with doors opening at 9am each day, and tomorrow there is an appearance by Billie Piper… really looking forward to meeting her.
Stay tuned to Following The Nerd for more!
Day Two Report: Sunday May 26th
The day started early once again with meeting up with fellow Con-ers whilst waiting for the free shuttle bus at 7:20am. After some confusion over the timings of the shuttle service, we all arrived at The Don’s Stadium shortly before 9am.
With queues already massing outside, we waited our turn to enter the event. Thankfully I had the foresight to purchase my photograph tickets the previous day as the queues were enormous.
First up was a photo opportunity with Spice Williams, the female Klingon Officer from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and it was without doubt a total pleasure chatting to her and getting her photograph.
From there, it was a swift queue change to get Billie Piper’s photograph. As Billie is an extremely popular guest, and only attending the one day, it was understandable that her queues would be long and I was prepared for such. In next to no time, the queue flowed and it was my turn to get my picture take, and I was not disappointed.
Next I virtually ran to the Christopher Judge (Teal’c from Stargate SG-1) and was greeted with a massive smile and a very welcoming gesture for my picture. Thankfully I was spared a kiss though to their delights, some ladies were very red faced and happy at this, why, I have no idea.
My last photoshoot for the day was Bonnie Langford (a classic Doctor Who assistant from the 1980’s). It was truly a thrill for me to find that Bonnie was as endearing to her fans as her character was to The Doctor. Later on I had the pleasure of getting her autograph and having a laugh with her, one of the highlights of the entire weekend for me.
As I mentioned in Day One’s write up, Collectormania is a Con that does not hold talks or demonstrations, but it is primarily a photograph/autograph convention. This suits perfectly well as the guests have a timetable to adhere to and fans can have a little bit of a chat and banter with the guests, schedule and demand willing.
Having met up with some wonderful people throughout the weekend, including friends from back home and chatting to fellow Nerds and Nerdettes, the atmosphere was second to none. With some attendees choosing to dress in costume, though there was no cosplay competition, the colourful dress only enhanced the atmosphere even more.
Sadly though, the weekend passed all to quickly and with the close of Sunday, that really only left a few of the quests for Mondays opening. Though this was a perfect opportunity to browse through the various vendors and purchase more than a few collectibles.
In short, this was a truly memorable Collectormania Convention and one that I will most definitely attend again. Thankfully, there is only six weeks to London Film and Comic Con at Earls Court, see you there!
