In development since 2012, director Genndy Tartakovsky’s Popeye has revealed a behind-the-scenes first look video.
The storyline is being kept under wraps, but Popeye’s love interest Olive Oyl, nemesis Bluto and adopted child Swee’Pea will be part of the film.
Popeye was created by E.C. Segar and first appeared in the already established “Thimble Theater” comic strip in 1929. Introduced as a walk-on character, Popeye eventually became the star of the strip. In 1933, The Fleischers began to produce animated Popeye cartoons which through the 40s. Popeye also had a live action film in 1980 with Robert Altman directing and the late Robin Williams as the lead.
Tartakovsky is best known for creating Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, directing Star Wars: Clone Wars and his work on The Powerpuff Girls. He made his feature film directorial debut with Hotel Transylvania, and will be helming the sequel as well, which releases on September 25th, 2015.
