FIRST LOOK: Todd McFarlane confirms new Spawn animated series…

October 26th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher 1 Comment

Todd McFarlane took to Facebook to give fans an update on the long awaited sequel to 1997s live-action Spawn movie, and it ain’t gonna be live-action at all now.

Todd McFarlane has been talking about a follow-up to 1997s Spawn for a while now and whilst we “hear” a lot of things from McFarlane, nothing has quite came into fruition until now. Furthermore, as it turns out – which might be the best news for Spawn fans out there – it is going to be an animated series. Let’s not deny the fact that the film was a huge mess, but there were moments of genius within all the hammed up acting (Martin Sheen), and the bad CGI (the scenes in hell) – there was also a hell of a lot of good CGI moments for the time the film came out. However, one of the main problems to try and get a sequel into any kind of productions stage seemed to be due to funding concerns due to the reception and Box Office intake of the movie.

It only seems right for McFarlane to follow up the hard-R Rated animated series that aired on HBO for three years between 1997 and 1999. The animated series was much more in tone with the comics and the animation was superb winning the series myriad awards including 2 primetime Emmys. So, over here at FTN we are all for another animated series.

Released by McFarlane on his Facebook page (via Comic Book.com), Todd has previewed three pieces of art and a gave a brief message saying there’s more on the way. The art includes a finished background and what looks like a storyboard as well as a character design of NYPD homicide detectives Sam and Twitch. The style seems to indicate that this will be hand-drawn animation, which suits moody and creepy tone of Spawn

Here’s McFarlane’s message: “For ALL of you that have been asking…here’s a SNEAK PEEK at some NEW SPAWN ANIMATION that is in the works!!!!!! Don’t tell anyone I showed you because you’re the FIRST to see it!!!!!!

At every convention and in every interview I do I am asked a couple of repetitive questions: “When is the new Spawn movie coming and when are we going to see more Animation like we did on HBO years ago?” (I also get a lot of ‘when are you going to draw The Amazing Spider-Man for Marvel again?’…)For those of you that don’t know, the original Spawn Animation was aired on HBO for three years and won a couple of Emmy Awards. Ever since it went off the air, fans have been bugging me to bring it back. Well, for your eyes only, here are some early images of a few key characters and a rough of a city street in black and white and in color.

If you all seem interested there is LOTS and LOTS more I can show you!!!!!! I may even put up some of the voice tracks for you.

Oh…and just wait until you see SPAWN himself!

Enjoy, Todd”
