Can I just say wow, what an issue! We are taken back 6 years in Earth 2’s history to a time when the Trinity were still alive (If you’ll recall they all perished in issue #1 to clear the way for the younger version of the soon-to-be JSA). Except here they are a foursome joined by Terry Sloan, the original Mr. Terrific. You might remember him popping up in the last issue as Earth 1’s Mr. Terrific Michael Holt was transported to Earth 2.
As our heroes are fighting the forces of Apokolips, but Sloan as a plan all his own that he’s hidden from the others. His plan causes him to turn on his team and explains the huge craters in the Earth we saw Alan Scott’s plane flying over in an earlier issue.
First can I just say that Sloan has a really kick butt costume. I loved the design. I really hope that he returns to it as it seems that he will be a main antagonist for our current Earth 2 heroes. His character brings to mind Watchmen’s Ozymandias, a guy so smart that he thinks he knows what’s best for the world. And the way he enacts his plan his superbly brilliant. Right after a small victory? None of the Trinity even see it coming.
This is a great story and a great sort of origin if you will for Sloan’s villain turn. Even though in his monologue he tells you he’s about to pull of something bad, you never understand the sheer magnitude of it until it actually happens. And seeing those panels come to life was spectacular. Especially the panned out panel of the Earth.
This issue has me excited to see what else Sloan has in store for our current heroes in the Earth 2 dimension, as the final panel shows him plotting with drink in hand. Things are going to get hot on Earth 2!
