Ah, the New 52 origin story of the ring slinger with biggest mouth(and attitude), Guy Gardner. While a rookie Gardner is caught in the heat of losing battle we get to see his origin played out via flashback. Guy is shown here as a disgraced cop hailing from a cop family. When his cop brother finds himself pinned down in a firefight it’s Guy to the rescue. Without fear or hesitation he rescues his brother and in turn is bestowed a Green Lantern ring. Once we cut back to the present time Guy musters the will to defeat the enemy and earn his badge.
It’s a pretty straight forward story, no surprises or twists here. We all know what’s going to happen and how it’s going to end. Seeing Guy’s life before the ring was interesting though. The dynamic between him and his father was sad to see. Though his dad is playing the stereotypical alcoholic ex cop who can’t let go of the job.
The story does play out in a cliche way. We all know by the end of the flashback Guy would summon the will to defeat the guy that was kicking the Corps collective butts. The big bad named Xar, once captured, gives the “I will get my revenge on you” speech leading me to believe that we may see him pop up again.
Overall nothing special here, just a decent story.
