It’s a Nightwing origin story, but not the origin of Nightwing. Here Dick Grayson reflects on his past and retells his origin as Robin in the New52.
The story doesn’t tell us much that we don’t already know, but what I liked here are the subtle touches. The reason why Dick takes the name Robin, how Dick figures out that Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, his donning of the Robin costume and even his training. These all go to kind of round out a character we are already familiar with to make us see him a little differently.
I also liked seeing Dick in the red and green because besides Green Lantern, Robin and Nightwing are my favorite DC characters. One thing that was kind of funny is his Robin origin tends to mirror Tim Drake’s pre-New52 origin more than his own pre New52 roots. Of course I always like how Batman sees himself in most Robins save for Damian. With Damian it’s probably literal. We also get a set up here that will lead into a new enemy and story arc once we get to Nightwing #13.
We get some really solid art here. I love how the facial expressions here really sell us on the mood changes in the story telling. The art breaks through the page to give us some great action scenes. Overall there isn’t a whole lot of stuff here that’s not familiar but what we do get is a very solid story with some great art. This is a great read for any fan of the Bat Family.
