Ricky Gervais has been speaking ahead of his new comedy series about a retirement home worker.
The 50-year-old comedian said Derek, in which he stars in the lead role, would focus on normal people with normal problems.
He told The Sun: “No one cares about old people in this country. There is a sort of army of youth, but getting old is the one thing that will happen to everyone.
“I just want to do normal people with normal problems again. It is time to do that. I want to explore some themes I haven’t done before.
“I do like getting close to real emotion — I have never been scared of that.”
Starring alongside Ricky in his first acting role is Karl Pilkington, who everyone will remember as the hapless hero in An Idiot Abroad.
Gervais said he wrote the role for him and “knew that if he did what I said it would be great”.
“I knew he could do it,” he continued. “Some of the things I wrote for him to say, he could have said himself. He was a bit nervous at first but it is daunting.”
The new show starts on Channel 4 on April 12.
