I always get in bother when I tell people my favourite Tarantino movie is Jackie Brown. But I love everything about that movie, the performances, the dialogue, the linear plot, the cast. It gels perfectly and when Michael Keaton turns up? ‘Awesome sauce’ as a colleage of mine would say…
Now, there’s a scene in Jackie Brown were Ordell, played by Samuel Jackson, told Louis, played by Robert DeNiro(in his last great role? Discuss…), after he shoots him, “What the f*#k happened to you, man? S*#t, your ass used to be beautiful.”
It seems that idea has been festering on someone’s mind because Switch is coming. Aintitcool are saying that Switch will be set some 15 years before Jackie Brown and Ordell will be played by Mos Def – who put in a stunning performance in the last season of Dexter as brother Sam – while Louis will be played by Hawkes. Now, while we at FTN HQ are a little skeptical on these actors’ abilities to match the performances of two powerhouses like DeNiro and Jackson, we feel it’s hard to argue that they certainly look the part (which I’ve thoughtfully demonstrated with a helpful graphic).
Plotwise, aintitcool are saying: “The characters of Ordell Robie and Louis Gara are Elmore Leonard’s, and in 1978 Leonard published THE SWITCH, which had Ordell and Louis, 15 years before the events of JACKIE BROWN (or RUM PUNCH, Leonard’s novel), teaming up to kidnap the wife of a real estate broker. But the broker refuses to pay for her release, so she plots against her husband, with Ordell and Louis caught in the middle.”
Now, it seems Variety broke the story and according to them, Dan Schechter loved Leonard’s book and went ahead and put together a script which he sent to his agent. The legend goes that somehow the script went to Elmore Leonard who sued for a fortune. Nah, only kidding, he loved it so much he’s onboard as a producer.
So, while the absence of Quentin Tarantino in Switch concerns me, the blessing of Leonard makes me rest better. It starts shooting in May for a 2013 release.
