Although a previous Deadline report indicated that both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy were on the short list to play Dr. Strange, three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix, has been mentioned as being involved for the role of Sorceror Supreme since July.
Now according to Collider, Phoenix’s deal is being finalized. The site adds that the Jack Huston rumor for Strange is just that, a rumor.
According to Collider:
” his contract is essentially at the 1 yard line, about to pass into the endzone. Though some believed the length of time it’s taken for Phoenix to finalized his deal was a sign that things might have gone south, it makes sense that an actor of Phoenix’s caliber and temperament would want to ensure that his Marvel contract doesn’t restrict his creative freedom to take on other projects outside the MCU.”
This would be Phoenix’s first foray into comic book movies, having previously passed up on the role of Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While it seems a little strange (sorry) to see Phoenix, always unpredictable in his career choices, leading a Marvel movie you cannot deny his acting ability.

Although no release date for Doctor Strange has been announced, it seems to work with July 8th, 2016 that Marvel has set aside.
