Lost showrunner handling Psycho: The Early Years TV series

March 14th, 2012 by Marc Comments

We’ve heard rumours of a Psycho TV series for a while now and to be honest we weren’t particularly bothered or excited because it sounded like another horrible remake/prequel/lazy cash-in on a famous concept (Scarlett Johansson is apparently attached to a new movie version too, playing the role made famous by Janey Leigh, no confirmation of they are linked though) .

However, we pricked up our ears when we heard that Lost showrunner Carlton Cruse is executive producer. Why are we excited? Well, say what you want about Lost (it fumbled the ball, they didn’t know where they were going, etc) but when it was good there was nothing better. It had a tight cast of well fleshed out, interesting characters and was never less than totally watchable and quite often even stretched to unmissable. So, to have someone of Cruse’s talents attached to the six-part series is a good sign indeed.

Norman Bates is a complex character who no doubt has a great background story to be told, hopefully it can be done in this six-part ‘event’ series. Just so long as it doesn’t become a teen-angst drama but rather a dark, psychological study of a deeply flawed character… something like early series Dexter would be the way forward rather than One Tree Hill.

Consider us optimistic but very, very cautious…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
