NASA head to infinity… and beyond with new spacesuit

December 23rd, 2012 by Marc Comments

Talk about life imitating art?! Looks like NASA are set to go to infinity. And beyond.

Well, NASA have revealed their latest spacesuit, the Z-1 Prototype Spacesuit and Portable Life Support System (PLSS) 2.0. And it looks very familiar…

and we can’t help but think this new outfit was inspired by ‘Toy Story’s’ own Buzz Lightyear. Are our astronauts headed to infinity and beyond?

The suit, according to Screen Crush, ‘will be easier to put on than previous version (astronauts will be able to slip in and out, just like they do in the movies), is more flexible allowing for a wider range of motion and will have its own airlock.  Whether NASA will change their name to Star Command remains to be seen.’

Right now, the Z-1 is just a prototype and NASA continues to fine-tune the spacesuit, already working on the Z-2.The Z-1 swas named one of Time Magazine’s “Best Inventions of 2012″. We’re just wondering if the suit was designed by a few Pixar fanboys and girls.

Toooo infinity… and beyond!

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
