The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back and not through the interpretation of Michael Bay, but back through the genius of the original TMNT Co-Creator Kevin Eastman.
This animated version of the TMNT features an all-star voice cast. Jason Biggs (of American Pie fame) voices Leonardo, Rob Paulsen (who voiced Raphael in the 1987 cartoon series) voices Donatello, Sean Austin (Sam from Lord of the Rings) voices Raphael and Greg Cipes (famous for voice acting in Ben 10, Teen Titans and the Ultimate Spider-Man series) voices Michelangelo. Also onboard as a voice actor is the world famous Nolan North(who’s famous for animated voice acting, but notably for his gaming voice acting).
The series hits the US on Nickelodeon this fall and hopefully the UK soon after.
In a preview I saw at MCM, Kevin Eastman and Senior Vice President Nickelodeon Animation Current Series, Rich Magallanes say that they are taking the turtles back to what they are fundamentally about. They’re making them younger and putting the emphasis on them being teenage brothers. There’s more authentic ninjitsu involved as the Co-Executive Producer is a trained ninja who had the storyboard artists study the moves of sensei consultants.
Rich Magallanes says that the series is CG meets anime, incorporating a 2d comic book feel. Some slight changes have happened to the characters, Donatello has a gap in his teeth, Raphael a chink in his armour, Michelangelo has freckles and the two characters. Donatello and Michelangelo who used to have blunt weapons now carry their bladed counter-parts. Both April O’Neil and Splinter are younger, April to fit in more with the TMNT’s age group and Splinter as a more physical counter to Shredder, who’s also back with less comedy and is now a much darker force.
The preview I saw was hugely impressive in its art style, as well as the voice actors and writers capturing the feel of each of the characters. The series trailer which premiers on Nick.com today and during the season 1 finale of the Legend of Kora this Saturday can be viewed below. A new series of action figures will also be available in the US later this year and the UK in Jan 2013 which we previewed in February here.
To celebrate this, we’ve got some Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles prizes to give away. The winner will receive issues #1 and #3 of IDW’s new TMNT comic, a choice of either the very limited edition official Nick TMNT Raphael or Michelangelo bandanna and a VIP Nick Turtles lanyard. The runner up will receive the other very limited edition official Nick TMNT Raphael or Michelangelo bandanna and a VIP Nick Turtles lanyard.
