On Monday 28th May 2012, with not a lot planned for the weekend ahead, a quick phone call to Showmasters to see if they had any dealer tables available for Collectormania 18, followed by a visit to Stena’s website to book the ferry and we were all set for a trip to Milton Keynes to rub shoulders with the likes of Karen Gillan, Jason Momoa, Michael Dorn and Brandon Routh.
With over 75 guests present, mostly from the Sci-Fi TV and film genre, and a host of traders with specialists dealing in everything from fine art prints to t-shirts to action figures – there was even one stall that only sold mugs!
There were also members from Galactic Knights, the MK Garrison, the UK Ghostbusters and R2 Builders along with one stall giving out free sci-fi books to advertise the World Science Fiction Convention in 2014.
Unfortunately as a dealer you don’t get to see too much of these types of events. Occasionally you catch a glimpse of one of the guests ambling past your table en route to their stands but for the most part we are stuck behind our tables.
On the Friday afternoon Jason Momoa and Brandon Routh (pictured with me below) took to the hallowed turf of the MK Dons stadium for an impromptu game of soccer. Routh showed all the skills (or lack of) you would expect from an American while Momoa, who was offered a soccer scholarship at Fort Lewis – Colorado, showed some neat touches.
On the Friday evening dealers and customers, who had purchased resident passes, were invited to a party at the Red Dot Bar in the DoubleTree Hotel – part of the impressive MK Dons stadium, to celebrate Collectormania’s 10th birthday. A nice touch by the organisers that allowed members of the paying public to mingle with guests including Callum Blue, David Prowse, Lance Henriksen (below), Nichelle Nicolls, Michael Dorn and Carl Weathers.
As part of the entertainment everyone was treated to a ride in a 1960’s replica Batmobile (below) or try their luck on a rodeo bull! That is if they could persuade Jason Momoa (below) to step off the bucking bronco. The Game of Throne’s star showed his competitive streak as he repeatedly attempted to beat the best time of the evening. At one point Momoa came crashing off the mechanical rodeo to a chorus of “oohs” but showed no signs of injury much to the pleasure of the organisers.
The guest list on the Saturday was predominantly made up of actors/actresses from the world of Doctor Who, including five former Doctors – Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann.
Added to that there was Karen Gillan (Amy Pond), John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness), Louise Jameson (Leela), Katy Manning (Jo Grant) and David Banks (Cyber Leader). With the strong Doctor Who presence on the Saturday there were plenty of cos-players dressed as characters from the BBC’s long running Sci-Fi show and a few motorised Daleks circulating the concourse of the stadium.
There were also plenty of Game of Thrones actors/actresses in attendance, mostly on the Sunday. Along with Momoa who appeared all three days were Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), James Cosmo (Lord Mormont), Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell), Natalia Tena (Osha), David Bradley (Walder Frey), Josef Atlin (Pypar) and Roxanne McKee (Doreah).
All in all an excellant event, well attended with plenty of guests (Jaws himself is pictured below – Richard Kiel), dealers and cos-players both official and unofficial. Collectormania takes their show to Scotland in August and who knows we may need to book another ferry to attend the Glasgow event.
