Roberto Orci talks Star Trek 3′s course heading

June 27th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher 1 Comment

Star Trek 3 has set a course for the final frontier. Director Roberto Orci, in speaking to Geoff Boucher on the Humans From Earth podcast (via Badass Digest) revealed that, unlike J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the new film will take place in deep space:

“In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.  So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.”

Having previously written both of the new Star Trek films, Orci is joined by screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, on the script for Star Trek 3.

Paramount has revealed Star Trek 3 will land in theaters in 2016, just in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
