SDCC 2013: Joss Whedon: Age of Ultron is an origin story, without Hank Pym

This news has been going around the web most of the day, but I finally got my hands on the actual video that Marvel just released.

Marvel caught up with Joss Whedon to talk about what many fans thought stole the show at SDCC,  The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whedon reveal that he always wanted to use Ultron as the villain in a sequel, and he goes on to clear up some misconceptions that the title has caused:

A lot of people since we’ve called it Age of Ultron, and there was a book called Age of Ultron just recently, assumed that was the storyline we’re doing, which is not the case. We’re doing our own version of the origin story for Ultron. The other thing is in the origin story, there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed that he will be in the mix. But he’s not. Because we’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside.”

Whedon also admitted to knowing that this would be the sequel for the film since before he made the first “Avengers” movie:

“Since before I even took the job of making the first one, I thought ‘Well I don’t know if I want to make this movie, but the second one should have Ultron in it!’”

The director touches on the origin a bit:

“We’re crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from The Avengers we already know about. It’s a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house. There’s a science fiction element that I think is a little bit stronger than the other film.”

When asked about Ultron’s looks as compared to the comics:

Ultron is definitely somebody who evolves, so we’re going to get together a couple of sort of  iterations.”

When asked if Avengers could take place out of the United States:

“It’s very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place not just in America, but the world.”

While still writing the film, Whedon appears to be having the most fun writing one of the returning characters instead of one of the new ones:

“Part of the fun for me, definitely, this time around is writing Hawkeye, because he did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and sort of had to walk around scowley for most of the movie last time. So now it’s nice to actually have the character there and really see him interact with the other guys.”

Finally he revealed that they will begin shooting at the end of February, beginning of March in London.

So without Hank Pym who will create Ultron? Well, Tony Stark seems to be the most obvious way to go, especially after in Iron Man 3 we saw that Tony had managed to create sentient versions of his armor. There’s always the off chance it could be some type of S.H.I.E.L.D experiment but you would still need a genius to create him.

What do you guys think?
