Snow Circles are a genuine work of art

December 30th, 2012 by Owen Quinn Comments

We’re all familiar with crop circles but up in the Alps at the ski resort of Arc2000, Savoie France similar patterns have been appearing in the snow fields. But these are not the product of alien visitation but one Simon Beck, who studied Engineering Science at Oxford University.

Due to a foot problem, according to the Daily Mail, Mr Beck cannot run so spends his time trudging to make his intricate patterns. Some can take up to five hours to create one. It’s one of the few forms of exercise he can take and keeps going until he’s knackered. He says his method of creating them are a form of reverse engineering where he plots the patterns before setting off to tramp them into the snow.

He says the main points and lines are surveyed using a sighting compass which is also used in orienteering maps with distance calculated by pace counting or string.

Given that Lego messes me up, Mr Beck is to be applauded not only for his work but his determination to not let health problems slow him down.

The man is amazing and more of his work can be seen on his Facebook page at
