Well, the speculation is over as one of comics’ all-time evil, em, people gets cast. Yes, the Governor from The Walking Dead comic series was recently confirmed as on the schedule for season three and now it’s been confirmed who will play him… David Morrisey. Eh, what?
Now, don’t get confused, this is not Bob the Builder, but rather his brother. Morrisey is probably one of the last people we’d ever have imagined in the role, after all the character is without question one of the most disgusting, vile, evil characters in any literature or genre, so casting a nice bloke like Morrisey is not what we expected. But don’t get us wrong, we reckon he has the acting chops to pull it off, the question is just how far the TV series will go regarding the character because frankly we doubt you could screen half the things he does in print.
The Governor, Brian Blake, is the ruthless leader of a group of survivors who live in a settlement called Woodbury and becomes the series’ first and so far only true nemisis for Rick and the gang.
Our theory is the people Rick and Co met in this week’s and last week’s episodes are from Woodbury as there are few other survivors in the comics between the farm and the Governor. But does that mean they’ll skip the whole prison part of the story? If Morrisey is in season 3 – filming in Spring – then it may well be so… but we’re thinking about the comic too much; the series has clearly shown the comic is a rough guide only.
With a slightly better opening to the secong half of season two we’re hopeful the series still has, em, legs… but the Governor could be make or break for the show.
