OK everyone try to remain calm, but the internet rumour mill is about to go into meltdown as we all board the ‘OMG The Dark Tower is about to be made into a series of movies & TV episodes’ train. Again.
This time however, after Universal dropped the project recently, Warners are apparently only a heartbeat from signing the deal to do it… yes, we may yet see The Dark Tower on the big screen. The even better news is that, if you all remember, the original plan for this adaptation of Stephen King’s masterpiece, was to have a multi-media project. IE movies and a couple of TV seasons. It looks like this could still be on the cards, with the even better news being that the TV section will be handled by the unflinching HBO… a truly worthy home for the tale.
So it’s all good so far… where’s the bad? Well, Akiva Goldsman’s script is still the basis for the project, although Warners have hired him to rewrite it and tidy it up. That’s right, the man who wrote Batman & Robin is still in scripting duties of one of the deepest, most complex stories of modern times. The other worrying news is that Ron Howard too is still attached. While we can’t falt Howard’s enthusiasm, we do think he’s too bland a director to handle the story…
However, just to leave you on a high note, whispers are that, so long as scheduling allows for it, Javier Bardem is still attached to play Roland Deschain. We at FTN think he’s a perfect choice, no please Warner, please make the impossible possible….
