Will Venom get his own movie?

June 20th, 2012 by Kelly 1 Comment

After the premiere of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man this week, the producers of the movie were cornered by the media about the possibility of Venom making another appearance in the franchise after his rather weak appearance in ‘Spider-Man 3’.

Avi Arad commented on the character, saying: “The reason you didn’t see more development on Venom in the comics is because this power that he was given, he knew who Peter was, he knew who Spider-Man was, so go kill him already. We always struggle with storylines and you see the new Venom books.”

However, Arad claims that all in all, he is basically a good guy: “As you know, Venom is defender of the innocent,” he continued. “The only guy he really, really hates is Peter Parker, Spider-Man.”

So does this mean we can look forward to seeing more of Venom? Perhaps his own movie? “The truth is he also deserves his own movie,” Matthew Tolmach said. “We’ve been sitting around in a room talking about Venom stories and it’s a really full bodied complicated character…”

Questions were also asked about the possibility of Spider-Man himself being involved in an ‘Avengers’ sequel. The producers confirmed nothing, but admitted that it was something they had considered and think that it would be a great idea for both Disney and Sony. However, they said for now they would be looking into Venom, which would occur separately from any future avenging.

Kelly has been a Star Wars enthusiast since birth and while new to the Marvel and DC Universes, laps them up faster than Odin steals Jotun babies. In her spare time she enjoys marathon-watching Buffy, rereading old books, dancing quite well, acting the lig, singing quite badly and formulating devious plans for world domination over some Shakespeare and a cuppa. If she isn't writing something abstract for her own enjoyment, or an article for Following the Nerd, she can be found trooping with the Emerald Garrison or storming the Death Star (sometimes both). She loves strawberries but hates bananas and thinks Loki just needs a hug. Her chosen superpower would be flying, and she thinks daffodils are ugly. She's also a Malteser - natural blonde but dyed brunette, though that's not really relevant, is it?

This is another case of another company other than Marvel trying to keep intillectual property that belongs to Marvel because it can make them money. If Sony/Columbia don’t make a movie with Venom in it within so long of his Spider-Man 3 appearance, the rights will revert back to Marvel. They’re just deciding if they can put enough spin on the character to make a stand alone movie which will make money instead of lose it. Trust me, if they do make a stand alone movie, it’ll be a bastardisation of the character. Venom is a villain. He’s not the hero.
