Guards! Guards! a Discworld Boardgame

Sir Terry Pratchett is a legend.  Discworld is legendary. And so to celebrate the newest edition of Guards! Guards! The Discworld boardgame we have a legendary competition.

Guards! Guards! is a board game based on the Discworld book of the same name with a few extras thrown in.  Players, using their Charm, Guild and Magic abilities, are tasked to collect and return five of the missing Great Spells to the Unseen University. Each player selects one of four Guilds, Thieves, Assassins, Alchemists or Fools and their Guild card gives a specific selection of the Great Spells to collect.  The Guild cards also grant unique Guild Abilities to be used to hinder their opponents.

But time is short, so rather than returning each Spell in person, players can recruit the good, the not so good, and the downright ugly inhabitants of Ankh-Morpork to act as guards and runners to protect and return the Spells to the University. There are fourteen locations on the board where players may Charm (or Bribe) Volunteers to join them on their quest.  Volunteers, like Cohen the Barbarian, can be assigned a set of skill attributes to be used to protect the Spells, or used to complete the Wizards’ Challenges – five tests of strength, brain, and worthiness which must be completed in order to enter the Unseen University with the Great Spells.

Launched in 2011 it has garnered a lot of followers (including me!) and the first print literally sold out by Christmas.  The second edition is now on sale (Huzzah!!)

The 2012 edition of Guards! Guards! A Discworld Boardgame follows basically the same format as the 2011 first edition with a number of cool amendments.  The Rule Book has been completely restructured, FAQs from fans have been answered, helpful diagrams have been added and a number of minor rules amendments have been made to make it play even better.

And so to celebrate this joyous occasion (you can’t half tell I am excited about this) Following the Nerd has teamed up with Backspindle Games (the makers of Guards! Guards!) to give you the opportunity to get a little piece of history into your mits.

The prize for this competition is a 1st edition copy of Guards! Guards! A Discworld boardgame containing one of only five signed certificates by Sir Terry Pratchett decorated with a beautiful Discworld hologram.  Now who doesn’t want the chance to win that absolutely superb prize?

So how do you win?  Simply put in a comment below or email: followingthenerd@gmail.com to answer this question:

Backspindle Games showed off a new Discworld inspired game at DiscworldCon.  What was it?

(HINT:- informal nickname for the semaphore system invented by Robert Dearheart.  Later run by the Grand Trunk Semaphore Company; or check out their facebook page to see what they got up to at the Discworld Convention)

You have until Thursday 6th September 2012 when the winner’s name will be announced LIVE on FTN Radio.

The new edition is now available from the Guards! Guards! website.  If you have the first edition – fear not as the rules to update the game are available on the site as a free download.
