XBox 360 wins the 2011 (console) war!

January 15th, 2012 by Marc 1 Comment

2011 was a big year for gaming.
Between gamers and publishers/developers there is something called the Console War. This implies the competitive between three big name developers like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. However, Nintendo usually does not participate in said war.
So it is usually Sony and Microsoft. Some people love 360 and others love PS3. In the year 2011 who sold the most consoles? The Xbox 360 sold the most consoles last year.
However, there is a silver lining to this. Even though the 360 sold the most, they actually came in short on the amount of profit they earned. Part of this is probably the Black Friday mark down of 360’s by nearly $200. Perhaps the 360 is starting to lose the appeal?

In other news, the PS3 and Wii were neck and neck in terms of sales. Sony sold 6.5 million units of consoles and handhelds this year. With Nintendo having 12 million total sales in combination with the Wii and handhelds including the 3DS.

So 360 fans rejoice that you are responsible for the 360 being the best selling console for 12 months in a row. With millions of consoles and kinect sensors sold, Microsoft could not have done it without you. However, 2012 is looking like Sony’s year. With the Vita quickly approaching, and a handful of exclusives that are generating buzz Microsoft may end up being left in the dust. Only time will tell. Who do you guys think will come out on top?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
