Zack Snyder on Man of Steel’s mass destruction

August 29th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher 4 Comments

For months, people have argued over whether or not Metropolis had been evacuated prior to the final battle in Man of Steel. Given the number of empty buildings seen during the final battle, some fans had rationalized the destruction in the movie’s conclusion by assuming that the city was mostly empty, following evacuations that would have occurred during the 24 hours that Zod gave the world to turn over Kal-El. If it wasn’t, then hundreds of people must have been killed in the battle. But if people had been killed we wouldn’t we have seen them in the film? At least some of them?

Well in a new interview with The Japan Times Snyder suggests that the slaughter is actually part of the philosophy behind the movie:

“I wanted the movie to have a mythological feeling. In ancient mythology, mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters. In other countries like Greece and Japan, myths were recounted through the generations, partly to answer unanswerable questions about death and violence. In America, we don’t have that legacy of ancient mythology. Superman (who first appeared in ‘Action Comics’ in 1938) is probably the closest we get. It’s a way of recounting the myth.”

What do you think of this explanation?

One thing though mass deaths don’t really symbolize disasters, they ARE disasters.
