It is no secret that Hollywood likes to keep things in the family (even the legendary Clint Eastwood’s family now have their own tv series!) Nowadays, you would be hard-pressed to find an actor in Hollywood who does not have a brother or sister who also just so happens to be an actor (like Thor’s Chris Hemsworth’s younger brother, Liam, of The Hunger Games). So to celebrate the much-anticipated release of After Earth (in cinemas 7th June 2013) starring real-life father and son, Will and Jaden Smith, we have put together some of our favourite father and son duos!
Will & Jaden Smith
After a young Jaden Smith scored small parts in tv series such as The Suite Life of Zack and Cody he made a giant leap to the big screen acting alongside father, Will, in what is probably his most famous acting credit to date, The Pursuit of Happyness (2006). The film went on to achieve both critical (both earned numerous nominations including an Academy Award nod for Will) and commercial success. They reunited in 2010 with the remake of The Karate Kid for which Will served as producer before both finally reappearing onscreen together in the upcoming After Earth, once again playing father and son and we cannot wait!
Ben & Jerry Stiller
The famous voice of Alex the Lion from the much-loved Madagascar films (and let’s not forget the hilarious Night at the Museum) starred alongside his dad in another film he is famous for, Zoolander. There’s nothing like watching a father and son act like they are not father and son. It’s weird, it’s funny and we’re still wondering why Hollywood continues to do it! Read on if you don’t believe us!
Martin & Charlie Sheen
Nowadays Charlie Sheen is best known for the extended period of weirdness that was… let’s call it “Sheen-gate” when the seemingly made son of actor Martin Sheen, went spectacularly off the rails. He could have done with a little toughness from his pops, something along the lines of when both Sheens appeared onscreen together in the film Cadence in which Charlie played a rebellious soldier and Martin, a bigoted prison ward. The pair also appeared, this time as father and son, in the 1987 flick, Wall Street.
Donald & Kiefer Sutherland
Already a successful actor before 24 hit our screens way back in 2001, the name, Jack Bauer, is now synonymous with Kiefer Sutherland, son of Donald Sutherland. In fact, Kiefer’s first ever film role was in his father’s film, Max Dugan Returns (1983). Since then, Kiefer has taken his career to new heights, appearing opposite his dad only one other time in A Time to Kill (1996).
James & Scott Caan
After his iconic role as Sonny in The Godfather catapulted his career, James Caan has continued his success throughout the years. Following closely behind is son, Scott Caan, who himself has embarked on a bright Hollywood career appearing in high profile films such as the Oceans films (opposite the likes of George Clooney and Brad Pitt). Though they only appeared together in a few scenes in A Boy Called Hate (1995), it took the two much longer to star together (as father and son, no less) in a Mercy (2009).
It seems that it’s all relative when it comes to talented families in Hollywood with Will and Jaden Smith leading the pack!
Catch them both when After Earth hits cinemas across the UK and Ireland from 7th June!
