Birds of Prey sequel planned with Batgirl replacing Harley Quinn as leader?

October 23rd, 2021 by Marc Comments

While, up until this point a Birds of Prey sequel seemed well and truly off the cards due to the first movie’s less than stellar performance (here), it seems there have been developments on that front.

The original movie starred Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn along with Jurnee Smollett as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya but this time around the line-up may have changed and it could likely be due to developments at HBO Max.

We know that HBO Max is developing a Batgirl movie starring Leslie Grace (here) in the lead role with JK Simmons confirmed as returning as Commissioner Gordon and possibly Ben Affleck back as Batman (here) and now, word is, that Batgirl will lead the Birds of Prey this time out, replacing Robbie’s Harley Quinn and, while Grace isn’t conformed as the Batgirl that will appear, we know the first BoP movie was set in the main DCEU and the Batgirl movie clearly is too, so we can’t imagine it’ll be anyone else.

Although, we must add, in the first movie young actress Ella Jay Basco played Cassandra Cain who, in the comics, is the fourth Batgirl so, it could be her in the role but, given her age in the comics, I feel this is unlikely to be the case.

On top of this, it’s expected that the others will return too.

This has all come, no doubt, from Smollett’s announced Black Canary movie (here) and the rumoured Huntress movie with Winstead (here).

So, with all these movies in development at HBO Max, so, based on that, I’m guessing the Birds of Prey sequel will be the team-up movie for all the characters with Batgirl, as in the comics, at the front of the group and, with Batgirl concept art like that below released at DC Fandome last week, we’re all on for this:

Let us know what you all think of this potential news… personally, I liked some elements of the first Birds of Prey movie with Smollett and Winstead the standouts and with Simmons and possibly Affleck returning for the Batgirl movie, I think this could potentially be a bit win for HBO Max, if it turns out that’s where it’s headed for.
