Idris Elba to star as James Bond? The rumour mill begins…

October 27th, 2012 by Marc 1 Comment

Even though Skyfall is literally just out and Daniel Craig has signed up for two more, speculation has already begun on who will play Bond next. Bale? Bana? Em, not quite…

Prometheus and The Wire star Idris Elba is in the running already according to our friends at nerdbastards. Now we know Craig is already signed on for two more Bond movies, but never let that put a good rumour down…

Naomie Harris, star of Skyfall and Elba’s co-star in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom told the Huffington Post: ‘I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.’

And to add more fuel to the fire, Elba himself has said: ‘I don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.’7

We love Elba and think he’s fantastic actor, but we’re just going to say it: Bond is a white character and, 50 years in, we don’t think he can be played by a black actor. Or a female. It’s just who the character is. Colin Salmon was rumoured as the next Bond during Brosnan’s time in the role too and again, while he’s a great actor, he’s just not right for the role. So by all means, make another movie set in the Bond world, a 008 or 009 movie, but we don’t see it working any other way.

What say you all?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
