IDW to release comic prequel series for Star Trek: Into Darkness

December 14th, 2012 by Christopher Williams Comments

Okay Trek fans, IDW Publishing is here to help you keep up to date with the Abrams-verse crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise through the best form of media in existence, comics. Coming in January, IDW will be releasing a prequel series to the upcoming Star Trek sequel, Into Darkness. Now this may be sacrilege to some, but I will fully admit, I hate Star Trek, however, Abrams version was as brilliant as brilliant could be. He’s actually made me a Star Trek fan (That being said, long live Star Wars and may you always rule over Star Trek.), so I am definitely excited not only for the sequel, but for this comic series as well.

Written by Mike Johnson with a story by Roberto Orci and art by David Messina, this 4-issue miniseries will lead directly into the May release of Star Trek Into Darkness, bridging the gap between the two films and giving fans an exclusive peek at the film’s mysterious story. Packed with the high-stakes adventure and sci-fi intrigue that has made the Star Trek franchise a global institution, STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS is sure to delight the legions of fans anxiously anticipating the continuing adventure of the intrepid crew of the USS Enterprise.

“We were thrilled by the reception that the original Countdown prequel comic received in 2009,” says Johnson. “We’re excited to be working again with David Messina and the team at IDW to bring fans an all-new original story that leads directly into the next film. Star Trek is back in a big way in 2013!”

STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color), licensed by CBS Consumer Products, will be available in stores in January 2013. STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS digital comics will be available via the iOS Star Trek Comics and IDW Comics apps, online at, and in the Apple iBookstore.

This should be a great series so don’t miss out, hit your LCS and go get some!
