UPDATED: James Gunn talks Fillion’s Cameo – Is Nathan Fillion Richard Rider AKA Nova in the Guardians of the Galaxy post credits scene?

June 22nd, 2014 by Marc 3 Comments

OK, we admit it, we’d kill to have Nathan Fillion play a big character in the Marvel movie universe, so this is something we know is a rumour but we REALLY want to be true.

Remember at the St Louis Comic Con Nathan Fillion teased that he would be in the post-credit scene in Guardians of the Galaxy (here)? No, well, anyway it looks like there might just be something to it after all…

With Ant-man in a state of flux at the minute, Latino Review reckon there’ll be no hints at it in the post credits of Guardians but that it may open the door to another character popping up.

They reckon we will see Nova – Richard Rider – in the credits and they are guessing that he’ll be played by Capt Mal himself, Nathan Fillion! No idea what movie this will be alluding to though.

They believe he will appear, helmeted and moving very fast; the casting of Fillion could be a genius move given that Nova is in many ways the Marvel answer to DC’s Green Lantern with Rider being a man who was recruited to be part of the intergalactic police force, the Nova Corps. And remember Fillion was for the longest time the fan choice to play Lantern before Ryan Reynolds was cast (see fan made trailer below)?

Giving another little bit of credibility to the rumour is the fact Guardians director James Gunn has worked with Fillion in the past, as has Joss Whedon. Tie this to Fillion’s statement earlier this year and we’re foolishly putting all our eggs in the one basket on this one…

Thoughts?

UPDATE

After the internet began to meltdown after the Fillon story broke, James Gunn took to Twitter to straighten things out – or muddy the water even more, depending on your opinion –

First he wrote:

Then, when people continued to ask if Fillion was at least involved, he added:

So Fillion IS in the movie, but probably not as Nova. But as who? And can we hope to see more of him in future movies? All will be revealed when we see the movie it seems…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
