Junkie XL out as Danny Elfman takes over scoring duties on Justice League movie

More changes on Warner Brothers’ Justice League movie…

Last month it was revealed that Zack Snyder has stepped down from Justice League after a devastating family tragedy, leaving it to Joss Whedon to finish before it’s big November release (here) and now there’s another change for the movie.

It has been revealed that Antonius Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, who was working with Snyder on the movie, is no longer scoring the movie and will be replaced by Danny Elfman.

XL, who did a masterful job along with Hans Zimmer on the Batman V Superman score under Snyder (he also scored Deadpool and Mad Max: Fury Road) is, according to reports, now moving on to scoring the new Tomb Raider movie.

However, he’s being replaced by Elfman, himself no stranger to superhero movies having scored Batman, Batman Returns, Spider-man, Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron (oh, and he composed the Simpsons theme) and much more.

We’re really torn here at FTN because we genuinely adore the Batman V Superman score, but Elfman’s iconic 1989 Batman score is still to this day one of the greatest comic book movie scores – second only to Superman, perhaps – and Elfman is probably our favourite composer after John Williams.

On his departure, Junkie XL said:  “As my mentor Hans Zimmer told me — you haven’t made it in Hollywood as a composer until you get replaced on a project. So I guess [I] finally graduated this week. It pains me to leave the project, but a big thanks to Zack for asking me to part of his vision, and I wish Danny, Joss and Warner Bros all the best with Justice League.”

Of course, many are saying this is further proof that Snyder’s vision for Justice League is being deconstructed now that he’s off the project and Whedon is in control. We doubt this is the case as we know Warners offered to delay release of the movie until Snyder was ready to return. And we also know that Whedon was brought in by Snyder to work on the movie.

While we don’t know exactly what happened with XL, we’re going to say that we’re excited to pick up the Justice League Score on CD and seeing Danny Elfman’s name on the sleeve.

Or is that just us?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
