“Logan movie is a standalone and not canon with the other X-Men movies,” says Jackman

look,  I – and the rest of FTN – for the most part love the X-Men movies, with X-en, X2, First Class and Days of Future Past the unquestionable standouts, but even we have to admit, the time line IS a bit, well, all over the place.

And guess what? It’s about to get worse.

We’re still trying to get over just how good the trailers (here and here) for Logan look and how, finally, the Wolverine is set to get the standalone movie he deserves with it seeming to mark the closing chapter of FOX’s X-Universe.

But it seems that, while Jackman is Wolverine and Patrick Stewart is back as Xavier, this movie is not… canon.

What?!

Jack has been talking about the movie and, in a bid to completely confuse the audience – ourselves included – had this to say: “When you see the full movie you’ll understand.

“Not only is it different in terms of timeline and tone, it’s a slightly different universe. It’s actually a different paradigm and that will become clear.”

How? Why? What?! Well, as this is Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine – unless he does pop up in Deadpool 2 like everyone hopes – FOX seemingly allowed him and director James Mangold to do whatever they want and what they wanted, it seems, was to put the X-Men continuity into even more disarray: “I said this was my last one and they said make the movie you want to make,” Jackman explained.

“And so Jim [Mangold] and I had this blank canvas and we wanted to make something really different. Definitely tonally different, I kept thinking The Wrestler, Unforgiven.

“He was thinking Unforgiven as well and The Gauntlet and these other movies which just seemed to really match his character. Early on we had the idea for the title not having anything to do with Wolverine in it but just being about the man. And what the collateral damage of being Wolverine your entire life would be.”

But that’s not is all, the actor hints that he’s aware of how askew the universe is already and it was partly why they felt they could do as they pleased with this one: “It’s a stand alone movie in many ways,” he says. “It’s not really beholden to time lines and story lines in the other movies. Obviously Patrick Stewart was in there so we have some crossover but it feels very different and very fresh.

“[Following the timelines] becomes a chess game that you try to serve, which actually doesn’t help to tell a story and it’s sort of been a bit all over the place. I’m not critical of it – X-Men was the first movie really in comic book, no one thought there’d be another and there were different directors different off shoots.”

Man, this sort of both pleases and displeases us. We like a Logan unleashed but at the same time, can’t we just have a linear X-Men timeline for once (and don’t get us started on Fantastic Four at FOX)?!

So there you have it, Logan isn’t canon to the other X-Men universe. What do you all make of this? Let us know…

Logan slashes up cinema screens on 1 March.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
