Marvel talks about Iron Man 3’s Mandarin ‘twist’ (spoilers)

September 9th, 2013 by Marc 1 Comment

I loved Iron Man 3 and I adored what they did with the Mandarin… no two ways about it…

From here on may be deemed as spoilers

Although, it must be said, I loved it so much because of a few things. Firstly, I wasn’t that familiar with the character that it would upset me – if DC did it with Ra’s Al Ghul or The Joker I’d be fit to be tied – but Mandarin was always on my periphery; I know him, but not enough to get annoyed. Another reason was simply Ben Kingsley’s – Sir Ben to us – performance; he totally knocked it out of the park and gave one of the summer’s greatest moments. And thirdly, Marvel managed to keep it totally under wraps before I’d seen it – I had no idea and that alone made it a little special.

However, it did annoy some Marvel purists – and as I said above, I understand that. Now Marvel themselves, according to Dark Horizons, have spoken out about it.

Out doing the Iron Man 3 promotional tour – it’s out today on Blu-ray and DVD – Marvel co-President Louis D’Esposito has said there’ll be no going back, what’s done is done and Marvel are ok with it: “We thought there would be a little bit of a backlash, but the twist was so wonderful and Ben Kingsley is such a great actor that we thought that would overcome. And I think the box office said that we were right in making that decision. We don’t want to piss-off our fans, but it’s impossible to please everyone. We thought it was a great twist, we thought it was great story-telling, and that’s why we did it.”

So there you go… Trevor is here to stay.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
