Damsels in Distress – a Review

April 20th, 2012 by Dicky Comments

As IMDB describe “Damsels in Distress” , A trio of girls set out to change the male-dominated environment of the Seven Oaks college campus, and to rescue their fellow students from depression, grunge and low standards of every kind.

What I can say having just seen this film is that the film didn’t rescue the audience from depression!  This is Whit Stillman’s first film for 12 years and really it should have stayed in the can.  It follows a group of collage girls who run a Suicide Prevention Centre at a college in the USA and the story revolves around their involvement with preventing other students from committing suicide and smelling bad, (yes I know!).

Greta Gerwig plays the lead role as Violet and plays the nerdy lead very well, but the plot is weak, the humour non existent and the story confusing.  Part of the plot is ‘Violets’ dream of creating a new dance, which plays virtually no role in the film until the very end.

The film was introduced as the funniest and best film at last years Venice Film Festival, so I am glad I didn’t attend the festival in Italy as the rest of the offerings must have been pretty bad.

See the film if you are a Stillman fan, or its raining outside and you cant think of anything else to do.
