We’ll try not to let our excitement get the better of us over this one but new reports indicate that Darth Vader is going to get incredibly brutal in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While the Sith Lord wasn’t exactly peaches and cream in the original trilogy, significant developments in computer graphics and special effects will enable the Dark Side to be darker than ever.
Basically, Vader’s going to crush a lot of ‘Rebel Scum.’
Making Star Wars (via Squareeyed) has the scoop: ‘The action sequences filmed are unknown, but there was work pitching the different ways Darth Vader could kill rebels on a battlefield with the Force and his lightsaber. The storyboard “pitches” showed decapitated rebels, people being dismembered by Vader throwing his sword, levitating bodies to make human shields, and so on. The art was more violent than what we’ve seen Darth Vader do on screen before.’
Considering that J.J. Abrams introduced Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens as the Vader-wannabe who possessed the badass ability to stop a blaster bolt in mid-air, we’re stoked to see what Gareth Edwards has in store for Vader.
It might also be worth noting that lightsaber throws are something that have already been included in Star Wars’ latest video game, Battlefront as well as The Force Unleashed games.
This all being said, while we want Vader to be a terrifying force of nature, there’s only so far we want to see him go… we know he’s capable of all the things described above but that doesn’t mean they should be in the movie; the last thing anyone wants is an R-Rated Star Wars.
Being called an ‘anthology’ film but essentially a prequel, Rogue One is set shortly before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, the story focusing on a group of Rebel spies on a mission to steal the plans for the Empire’s new weapon, the Death Star.
Directed by Godzilla-reboot helmer Gareth Edwards, it is set for release on 16 December, 2016, bridging the gap between The Force Awakens and Star Wars Episode VIII.
