PROFILE: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s down time fun!

May 31st, 2013 by Marc Comments

One minute he was the small, geeky one in cult comedy TV series Third Rock from the Sun. And then bam, he’s an action man, romantic, heroic, poignant, lovable, mean, eclectic actor who’s turning up in blockbuster after blockbuster. Yep, we’re talking about the adorable and phenomenally successful Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Born in 1981, he first came to most people’s attention in films like 10 Things I Hate About You and Beethoven. Just another child star, we thought. And then he disappeared for a bit. Turns out he was studying at Columbia University. But it wasn’t long before he had to return to acting and he ditched college in 2004. Since then he’s starred in (500) Days of Summer, Inception, 5r0/50, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, The Lookout and Lincoln.

As if that wasn’t enough, he starred in a comedy in 2013 which he wrote and directed (Don Jon) and will star next in the sequel Sin City, A Dame to Kill For. Oh, and he also founded a production company in 2004.

And, in among honing his acting skills, buffing his body into the shape we are lucky enough to witness today, he’s found time to run a rather amusing Twitter account that shows his personality is as lovable as his looks. It also shows that his real love lies on his production company – he describes it as a collaborative production company that comprises filmmakers, musicians and artists.

He has 1.75 million followers and he is actually properly interactive with them – he invites ideas and thoughts about his new film Don Jon – pretty unique for a major Hollywood A lister, huh? Can’t quite imagine the likes of Tom Cruise being quite as charmingly down to earth.

And because he’s down to earth it’s quite easy to imagine that he must pretty much be just like you and me during his down time. He’s into music, films, making home movies with his mates, online gaming. And of course, we get to see the new films he’s in this year.

In Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For, he plays the role of a gambler named Johnny. We can imagine he’ll cut a dash in the sequel to the stylised Sin City – all black and white and film noiresque. Given his love of technology, some method acting style research has to take place on and find him really getting into the role, as surely that would make him more convincing strutting round casinos and hitting big jackpots. Of course, at the moment it’s all speculation but at least it means we’d be able to get online ourselves and emulate our hero – rather easier than trying to copy his role in The Dark Knight Rises or Inception!

Mind you, I’m not sure you’d want to actually take him on in a high stakes challenge or anything else… judging by his achievements so far, he’d excel at gambling online just as much as he’s excelled at everything else. He’s a bona fide Renaissance man, and we can’t wait to see what else he’ll come up with over the next few years!

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
