Robert Downey Jr says Iron Man 3 is darker and truer to its comicbook roots PLUS new festive image

December 27th, 2012 by Marc Comments

Iron Man 3 is only a few short months away and just before it kicks off Avengers Phase 2, Robert Downey has decided to talk about the tone of the movie after the awesome trailer (below) seemed to show Tony Stark and Iron Man taking a serious hammering in a darker turn for these movies.

Nuts interviewed Downey Jnr recently and Iron Man 3 came up: “I think Shane [Black] has gone for a dark feel in this movie. It’s a lot grittier and goes back to its comic-book roots. It’s shaped into a really special movie – and Shane as been instrumental in that.”

As for The Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley, Downey Jnr said: Asked about Ben Kingsley’s work as the villain The Mandarin, he said: “I always think there’s something more terrifying about a villain who’s a genius, as opposed to just relying on strength or ability. We all know what a fantastic actor Ben Kingsley is, and he pulls off the evil genius with real terrifying results.”

Enjoy the festive image released by Marvel (above) where Tony Stark has gotten all festive.

The picture (above) is particularly interesting as director Shane Black has previously directed/written movies which have taken place over Christmas – Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Long Kiss Goodnight. Will we see Iron Man 3 take place during the same seasonal period?

Many who attended Comic-Con will also have noticed that a full clip from the film included Robert Downey Jr.’s character playing around with some new armor while dancing to Run DMC’s “Christmas in Holils”. All very interesting!

Iron Man 3 hits cinemas on April 26, 2013
