Scream creator Kevin Williamson confident Scream 6 is coming and discusses his original plans for Scream 5 and 6

It really seems that Scream is the franchise that won’t die… probably the benefit of putting a different killer(s) in the mask each time.

With the latest instalment, Scream [5] in cinemas now, it seems that everyone is talking about Ghostface again and, as a massive fan of the franchise since the first movie, I find this pretty exciting.

Adding to this the face that Scream [5] has made as much on its opening weekend as Scream 4 made in its entire run, it’s a safe bet we’ll see the killer return in one way or another.

And it seems that creator and writer of the first four movies and producer of this one, Kevin Williamson, agrees.

In a new interview Williamson confirms that while he has no interest in returning to write the series, he’d greenlight the next movie right away and, while the original plan was to see Ghostface hang up the outfit, depending on how well the new movie performs, we will likely see the franchise continue – without having to wait another decade – and it’s doing very well financially, with critics and with fans, thanks to a fun script and directing by Ready of Not’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Interestingly, Williamson has been talking about his plans for the original Scream 5 and 6 and, man, 5 sounds like it would have been a blast.

Fans will recall that at the end of Scream 4 Emma Roberts’ Jill, who was Sidney’s [Neve Campbell] niece, died after it turned out she was the main killer in that installment, however, it seems that originally she wasn’t set to die but rather become the lead in the next movie.

“Jill went to college, and then murders started on the campus. And it was a killer who knew she was the killer from the last film,” says Williamson.

“So the killer kept trying to expose her, so she would have to kill to keep it covered up. So it was killer meets killer. And Sidney was a professor at that school.

“Scream 6 was gonna answer whatever happened between Dewey [David Arquette]  and Gale [Courteney Cox], Sidney was in it, but it was more focused on Gale’s storyline.”

Williamson recently talked about this apprehension about being involved in a Scream movie without Wes Craven and why he came on board: “I had been really apprehensive about doing one of these films without Wes,” the writer noted. “The directors actually sent me a letter when the offer was sent and said the reason they are directors is because of Wes. So they’re even so honored to even be asked to make this film, and that they’re such huge fans of him and the films themselves, and of the cast, and that they really wanted to honor his voice, which I really, really believe they did.”

It certainly sounds like Williamson had a very cool idea for where the franchise went after Scream 4 – 4, 5 and 6 would have been a new trilogy – and, while the new movie does move away from his idea, he sure seems to be a fan.

I certainly liked Scream [5] but still think I like Scream 4 more (come at me) and, as such, would have rather have seen Williamson’s planned continuation, that said, I still have only watched the new movie once and might be more of a fan after anther few screenings.

But it is great to hear that the franchise seems to be alive and well and the set-up with the new characters in the series, there’s certainly some fun places this series could go. And yes, I’ll be there for whatever comes next.
